Do you know there is an international wetland in Taiwan? It is Sihcao (四草) Wetland in Annan(安南) District, Tainan City.
Beishanwei(北汕尾) and Nan shan(南汕), the north Taijiang Inner Sea(台江內海) was turned into Sihcao Wetland because a flood occurred and Luermen(鹿耳門) Harbor silted up to become a reclaimed land in 1823.
Environmental groups worried the establishment of Tainan Technology Industrial Park may cause serious damage to Sihcao Wetland. They actively negotiated with Council of Agriculture so that the proclamation of Sihcao Wildlife Refuge(四草野生動物保護區) was announced in November,2004. Tainan City Government took over the 550 hectares of Sihcao Wildlife Refuge.
In December 10th, 2007, according to Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, Zengwun Estuary Wetland(曾文溪口濕地) and Sihcao Wetland were listed as international wetlands out of 76 wetlands in Taiwan by Construction and Planning Agency Ministry of the Interior(CPAMI) (內政部營建署).
